Chunky Loteria Cards

Everyone has seen those cool Mexican Loteria cards that have images of everything from roosters to devils to mermaids to whatever on them. These are actually used in a Mexican version of Bingo. Well, guest artist Michael deMeng thought it would be fun to make some chunky and slightly more dimensional versions of these cards. So, with a bit of assemblage and collage (a.k.a. collage-ssemblage) we’re creating some nifty pieces of art, using found objects and ephemera as our guide. When you’re done you can turn them in to little wall hangings or play with them…just remember: You got to know when to hold ‘em. Michael will supply the card sized wooden bases to build from. Students should bring: Aves Apoxy Clay (non-toxic epoxy putty). Here’s a link if you have trouble finding it. http://www.sculptingstudio.com, a regular deck of cards, Collage elements- especially items relate to the cards you’re going to create, like watch parts, gears, typewriter parts….just about anything, really. Also bring Paint Brushes (a couple small detail brushes, and some cheap brushes (1/2 inch to 1 inch in size), String, twine and wire (a couple of different gauges), Basic Tools…pliers, scissors, Paint (acrylic…preferably Golden brand…either fluid or heavy body will work) in the following colors: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Black (Mars or Carbon), Titanium White, Pthalo Green (blue shade), Dioxazine Purple, Van Dyke Brown, Paynes Gray, Quinacridone Crimson, Anthraquinone Blue. Sand paper or sanding sponge, a random bunch of screws, bolts, nails (different sizes), Adhesives: Dap Kwik Seal Plus (white)- get this at the hardware store and Clear Liquid Nails or E6000. Optional Paints include Interference Colors (blue, violet or any others), Iridescent colors (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, etc), Micaceous Iron Oxide and Optional Tools (but highly recommend) include a Heat gun, Dremel with cut off wheel and engraving bit and Extension cord.
